Upper mustang trek

Upper Mustang is a remote, high-altitude region in northern Nepal near the border with China. Known as the former Kingdom of Lo, it preserves strong Tibetan culture, traditions, and ancient monasteries. The landscape is dry and desert-like due to its location in the rain shadow of the Annapurna range. The main destination is Lo Manthang, a historic walled city. Trekking here typically takes 10–14 days, starting from Jomsom. It is a restricted area requiring special permits and a licensed guide, making it one of Nepal’s most unique trekking experiences.

About this trek

The Upper Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most unique and mystical trekking experiences, often referred to as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom”. Nestled in the rain shadow of the Himalayas in north-central Nepal, this region remained largely inaccessible to foreigners until 1992, which has allowed it to preserve its ancient Tibetan culture, traditional villages, and rugged landscapes. Upper Mustang offers trekkers a journey into a land that seems frozen in time, with breathtaking desert-like valleys, dramatic cliffs, and a deep spiritual heritage.

The trek typically begins with a flight or drive from Pokhara or Kathmandu to Jomsom, the gateway to the Mustang region. From Jomsom, trekkers follow a well-defined trail along the Kaligandaki River, gradually ascending into the Mustang plateau. The journey passes through lower Mustang villages, where agriculture thrives in the narrow river valleys, before entering the Upper Mustang restricted area, where a special permit is required for all foreign trekkers.

One of the most compelling aspects of Upper Mustang is its stark, arid landscapes, which contrast sharply with the lush forests of central Nepal. The trek winds through deep canyons, red rock cliffs, and barren valleys, often compared to the landscapes of Tibet. Villages are scattered along the trails, built from stone and mud, with flat roofs and narrow alleys. Each settlement, such as Chele, Tangye, Lo Manthang, Ghami, and Chhuksang, reflects centuries of cultural continuity, where people still follow traditional Tibetan customs, wear distinctive clothing, and speak the Loke language, a dialect of Tibetan.

The heart of Upper Mustang is Lo Manthang, the walled capital city of the ancient kingdom. Lo Manthang is a vibrant example of Tibetan Buddhist culture, featuring monasteries, stupas, prayer wheels, and royal palaces. The Royal Palace, built in the 15th century, and the surrounding monasteries are central to the spiritual and social life of the region. Trekkers often witness daily life intertwined with ritual, from villagers performing morning prayers to colorful festivals like Tiji, a three-day spring festival symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Trekking in Upper Mustang is moderate to challenging, depending on the itinerary and acclimatization. The highest points, such as Tsarang or Ghar Gompa, reach above 4,000 meters, providing panoramic views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri ranges. Despite the arid climate, the trails are rich in historical caves, ancient monasteries, and hidden shrines, making each day of trekking a mix of adventure, cultural exploration, and photography opportunities.

Upper Mustang’s isolation has preserved not only its Tibetan heritage but also its unique flora and fauna. Rare birds, Himalayan blue sheep, and even the occasional snow leopard inhabit the region. The landscape is dotted with wind-eroded cliffs, colorful rock formations, and desert-like plateaus, giving the trek an otherworldly feel. Accommodation is basic but comfortable, with tea houses and lodges providing local meals like tsampa, momos, noodles, and dal bhat.

A typical 12–14 day Upper Mustang Trek includes stops at Jomsom, Kagbeni, Chele, Chhusang, Ghami, Tsarang, Lo Manthang, and return, allowing trekkers to fully immerse themselves in the culture, history, and natural beauty of the region. Permits include the Restricted Area Permit (approx. $500–$600 per person), in addition to the TIMS card.

In essence, the Upper Mustang Trek is more than a mountain adventure — it is a journey back in time. Trekkers experience a rare combination of Tibetan culture, spiritual heritage, and surreal landscapes. From ancient walled cities to desert plateaus and majestic Himalayan vistas, every step offers a glimpse into a world that has remained largely untouched by modernity. The trek challenges the body, nourishes the spirit, and leaves an indelible impression on anyone seeking a truly extraordinary Himalayan experience.
