About this trek

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of Nepal’s most famous short trekking routes, located in the Annapurna region of western Nepal. This trek is often called the “Annapurna Panorama Trek” because it offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks — including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and Nilgiri — all visible from the vantage point of Poon Hill (3,210 m).

The trek typically starts from Nayapul, about a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Pokhara, Nepal’s beautiful lakeside city. From Nayapul, the trail gradually climbs through terraced rice fields, lush forests, and charming Gurung and Magar villages. The route passes through several picturesque settlements such as Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk, each offering a unique cultural and natural experience.

One of the most memorable sections of the trek is the stone staircase at Ulleri, which consists of over 3,000 steps — a challenge for trekkers but also a rewarding climb that opens up to beautiful rhododendron forests and sweeping valley views. As you ascend higher, the cool mountain air, chirping of birds, and vibrant rhododendron blossoms (especially during spring) create a magical atmosphere.

The main highlight of the trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m), one of the best and most accessible viewpoints in the Annapurna region. Trekkers wake up before dawn to climb for about 45 minutes to an open hilltop, where they witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in the Himalayas. As the first rays of light hit the snowy peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, the mountains glow in shades of gold, pink, and orange — an unforgettable sight that captures the essence of trekking in Nepal.

Beyond its natural beauty, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek also provides deep cultural immersion. The Gurung and Magar people, who inhabit the region, are known for their warm hospitality, traditional houses, and unique way of life. Villages like Ghandruk are particularly famous for their traditional architecture, stone pathways, and museums that display the culture and history of the Gurung community.

The trek is considered easy to moderate, making it ideal for beginners, families, and trekkers with limited time. It usually takes 4–5 days to complete, though some prefer to extend it by connecting with other routes like the Annapurna Base Camp or Mardi Himal Trek. The trail is well-marked and has plenty of tea houses and lodges, offering comfortable accommodation and local Nepali meals like dal bhat, soups, and momos.

To trek in this region, trekkers need two permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000

  • TIMS Card: NPR 2,000

The best times to visit are during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when the skies are clear, temperatures are mild, and the mountains are most visible. Spring also brings vibrant rhododendron blooms, turning the forest trails into colorful natural corridors.
